The FETCH Park volunteers, along with the Long Beach Community Development Association, have worked closely with the Long Beach City leadership to com- plete all aspects of this project. Plans for Phase II and beyond include additional benches and planted trees, exercise, training, and agility equipment, walking path, pavilions, and even a water feature or dock-diving area. Completion of the first dog park in Long Beach will address the high interest and local demand of a large portion of our commu- nity, enhance the appeal of our recovering tourism, pro- mote the safety and welfare of dogs and dog own- ers and improve con- nectivity among citizens. An off-leash dog park offers many advantages to promote the welfare of both dogs and their owners by offering off-leash play areas where their owners can enjoy a park-like setting and the chance to socialize with oth- er canines and their owners. The American Kennel Club and Dr. M. Glasser say that a dog park is beneficial because it allows dogs to exercise and socialize safely, promotes responsible dog ownership and provides an out- let for dog owners to socialize. Puppies and adult dogs need room to run, and enclosed play areas permit them to do so while preventing them from endanger- ing themselves and others. In addition, dog parks can make for a better community by promot- ing public health and safety, as well-exercised dogs are better neighbors who are less likely to create a nuisance, bark exces- sively, and destroy property. In addition, because tourism is such an important component of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, communities with Dog Parks attract ‘Pet-Friendly’ tourism. More and more, people are trav- eling with their pets and often look for “dog-friendly” com- munities with an avail- able dog park. This gives pets and their owners a place to play and exercise after being con- fined to a vehicle or during travel and promotes a healthier and hap- pier pet. Our plan is to uti- lize our dog park to also provide a location that will offer dog training, education and events which will promote the welfare of our canine community by educating those who care for them. It also provides opportunities to host and promote adoption, spay/ neuter, vaccination events, agil- ity and other athletic pursuits (e.g., dock-diving) that will also further benefit our canine com- munity and increase responsible dog ownership. Our next meeting is April 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Activity and Senior Center, and we invite everyone to participate and volunteer.
