New boat ramps installed, work continues to restore Jim Simpson Sr. Memorial Pier at Long Beach Harbor

At a recent Long Beach Board of Alderman meeting, the Board formally accepted an award of a $1.5 million grant for the continued restoration and improvements to the Long Beach Harbor.

The latest milestone – new boat ramp docks were recently completed and are now in use at the east end of the harbor.

Meanwhile, work to restore the Jim Simpson Sr. Memorial Pier on the west side of the harbor is well underway.

“We’re excited to see continued work underway at the Jim Simpson Sr. Memorial Pier, as efforts move forward to restore this well-loved Gulf Coast landmark,” says Courtney Cuevas-Welch, Community Affairs Director for the City of Long Beach.

“While the pier is a Harrison County project, the City of Long Beach is grateful to see the progress being made toward getting it back open for our residents, visitors, fishermen and families from across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”

“The Jim Simpson Pier has long been a special part of our beachfront, and we know many in our community are looking forward to the day they can walk out over the water, cast a line, and enjoy the views once again,” Cuevas-Welch said.

Once the total restoration project nears closer to completion, the City will announce a public ceremony to celebrate its completion.
