Batman BBQ planned to support local animal rescue efforts

Updated: Aug 25

The Long Beach Police Department is working to decrease the number of stray cats and dogs in the city with the help of the Batman’s Long Beach Mississippi Animal Rescue Foundation, and an opportunity to contribute to that mission is close at hand.

On August 29, from noon to 5 p.m., the foundation will be hosting a barbecue fundraiser at the Long Beach Yacht Club. For a $10 ticket, participants will receive a plate of North Carolina chopped barbeque, baked beans, cole slaw, a roll and a choice of dessert, eat in or carry out. Social distancing measures will be taken for those who dine in. The police department will also be on hand with pets ready for adoption.

Money from this event will be used to fund upcoming projects for the foundation, including the purchase of spay/neuter vouchers, rabies shots and heartworm tests. According to the event page on Facebook, they are also hoping to upgrade the kennel camera system to include cell phone access and to create a pet registry to quickly match missing pets with their owners in Long Beach.

The Batman Foundation has saved LBPD animal control nearly $100,000 through fundraisers and pet supply drives. The foundation was formed when a stray cat wandered onto Wendy Wagner’s property. Not sure what to do, Wagner called animal control officer Kerry Hall, who took the cat, had him fixed and vaccinated, and returned him to his new home. The cat was named Batman, and the foundation was formed as a thank you to officer Hall and the Long Beach Police Department for working to help animals in Long Beach find homes.

The foundation was recently approved for Facebook fundraising and Amazon Smiles, so those who would like to help out but are unable to participate in the BBQ plate fundraiser can sign up for free at smile.amazon.com and select Batman’s LBMS Animal Rescue Foundation. Then, a portion of any purchase made on Amazon using this service will go to the foundation.

Tickets for the BBQ benefit may be purchased at The Broken Gadget or at 210 S Island View Avenue, Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m.

Tickets may also be purchased on PayPal at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BatmansLBMS.
