Shirk selected for leadership program

Ada Shirk (third from right) of Long Beach High School has been selected as one of only four juniors from the Coast to serve as representatives of the Coast Electric Power Association at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Leadership program. Each year, Coast Electric sponsors high school juniors from Hancock, Harrison and Pearl River counties for all-expense-paid leadership trips to Jackson and Washington, D.C. The Youth Leadership program brings more than 1,700 high school juniors from across the nation to Washington, D.C., each summer, where they learn about cooperatives and rural electrification from a national perspective. They also visit monuments and memorials and enjoy other sightseeing experiences. The students are selected based upon criteria such as their academic achievements; participation in student organizations; volunteerism in their schools, churches and communities and participation in local cooperative activities and/or interviews.
