In a significant shift aimed at enhancing the educational atmosphere, Pass Christian High School has announced new cell phone procedures set to take effect this academic year. Students will no longer be permitted to have their cell phones during class time.
However, they will be allowed to use their devices during lunch and between classes, giving them the opportunity to stay connected while minimizing distractions during lessons.
Recognizing the diverse teaching styles and classroom dynamics, teachers are given the autonomy to choose how best to manage cell phones in their rooms. Options include having phones turned off and stored away or designated areas within the classroom for students to place their devices.
Research suggests that excessive cell phone use can detract from learning experiences, prompting institutions to seek a balance that accommodates both digital connectivity and academic integrity. When asked about the implementation of no phones in class, Pass High sophomore Christopher Evans stated, “I feel that when students don't have their phone on them in class, it eliminates distraction from classwork, and allows students to focus on what's important.
The decision comes after extensive discussions among school administration, teachers, and parents, all of whom expressed concerns about the impact of cell phone usage on student engagement and focus. "We believe this change will help students academically by removing some distractions," said Principal Beth Bellipanni. "Our goal is to create an environment where learning is prioritized, and we feel this will contribute to that."
