Pitch Perfect: Students Channel Entrepreneurial Spirit in Historical Shark Tank

Posted

In a spirited classroom experiment, Ms. Heid Byrd’s Advanced Placement United States History (APUSH) students recently engaged in a unique educational exercise that mirrored the popular ABC series "Shark Tank". This innovative approach enabled students to dive deep into the world of 19th-century inventions, allowing them to not only enhance their historical knowledge but also refine their entrepreneurial skills.

Each student selected one of seventeen pivotal inventions from the early 1800s, conducting thorough research to understand its significance and impact. The students then crafted engaging presentations to pitch their ideas to a panel of guest sharks, which included two teacher representatives and two senior students who offered their insights and critiques.

The process mimicked the high-stakes atmosphere of the real Shark Tank, where budding entrepreneurs face tough questions and critical feedback from seasoned investors. The classroom setup encouraged students to think critically about their chosen inventions, addressing potential weaknesses and demonstrating both creativity and analytical skills.

“This has been a phenomenal way to connect history with real-world applications,” remarked Ms. Byrd. “Students are not just learning about inventions; they’re learning how to present them persuasively and respond to constructive criticism.”
