The Pass Christian Public Library has opened registration for its free Youth Summer Workshops. This year’s programs include a three-day blues harmonica workshop, a week-long film workshop, and arts and creative writing offerings.
Blues musician “Bayou” Shannon Williford will host a series of three blues harmonica workshops for fifth through eighth graders on June 2, June 4 and June 6, starting at 2 p.m. each day. During the workshop, students will learn about the Delta Blues and how to play the harmonica. Each student will receive a harmonica and a songbook, and the series of three classes will conclude with a student concert. Each day of the workshop will end at 4 p.m.

Then, beginning on June 5, the series of four Art for Youth’s Sake summer classes will begin. Held each Thursday at 2 p.m. through July 10, the classes are for youth ages twelve through eighteen. The partnership program between the library, the Pass Christian Art Association and local community artists will include classes in pottery, cartooning, gyotaku (fish printing) and watercolor.

On June 13, local author Margaret McMullen will lead a teen creative writing class. The workshop, “Begin Your Story,” will be held at 2 p.m. and offer teens the opportunity to learn to write stories, essays and/or poems creatively, using writing prompts. The workshop is for students ages twelve through eighteen.
The library will close out it summer teen workshops the week of June 16 to June 20, when, from 1 to 4 p.m. each day, students ages twelve to eighteen can learn about film scripting, directing, shooting and video editing from film professor Dr. Richard Ward. The “Lights! Camera! Action!” workshop will end with a public screening of the student-created short films.
All workshops are free, but, because space is limited, enrollment is required.
To enroll or for more information, call the Pass Christian Library at 228-452-4596. All workshops will be held at the library, which is located at 111 Hiern.
