Author to visit Feb. 3 for story time, reading challenge announced
By Guest Columnist Renee Rayburn, LBPL Youth and Technology Services
Hello, Long Beach! Here is what’s happening at the Long Beach Public Library in February.
February is Library Lover’s Month, and what better time to celebrate your child’s love of reading? To promote this, we would like to offer a certificate to our young readers who read and complete our “50 Books in February Challenge.” The rules are simple: books read by the child can be read alone, with a friend, with a sibling or other family member, or even a pet. The titles are then written on a premade reading record that you pick up in the children’s wing on Saturday, January 31. All titles must be checked out from the Long Beach Public Library or from the Tumblebooks database. Each child who turns in a completed list of fifty titles will receive a certificate.

Local author Lauren Holder will be at Preschool Story Time on Feb. 3 for a reading, farm-inspired fun, and a cozy, family-friendly experience.
Join us at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, as we welcome local author Lauren Holder to Preschool Story Time for a special reading of her children’s book, The Little Farmer on Madison Farms: The Adventure Begins.
Preschool Story Time will continue through February. It is held each Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the children’s wing and is geared towards the 4 and under crowd. We read a story, make a craft and dance to favorite children’s songs.
The Friends of the Library are looking for new members, as well as those who would be willing to fill the posts of retiring officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer). Anyone interested in filling one of these positions needs to be an active member of the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library. The next meeting will be on Monday, March 2, at 1 p.m., when voting on these positions will take place.
The Long Beach Board of Trustees will not meet in February.
The library will also be closed from Saturday, February 14, through Monday, February 16, for President’s Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, February 17, at 9 a.m.
As a quick reminder, the library’s hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
For more information about any of our events or offerings, please give us a call at 228-863-0711. The library is located at 209 Jeff Davis Avenue.
As always, we thank everyone for their continued support and patronage, and stay safe!
