J W Randolph School placed on National Register

Special to The Pass Post

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History recently announced that the J W Randolph School in Pass Christian is one of only fifteen sites across the state that were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2025.

The J W Randolph School, located at 315 Clark Avenue, is a restored 1927 Rosenwald school that once served as the only public high school for Black students in Pass Christian. The school survived Hurricane Katrina and stands today as a powerful symbol of education, resilience and community history.

Listings on the Register range from historic homes and schools to significant historic districts that reflect Mississippi’s cultural, architectural and social history. Mississippi is now home to 1,534 National Register listings, recognizing buildings, districts, sites, structures and objects worthy of preservation.

Nominations are reviewed by the Mississippi National Register Review Board, administered by MDAH, before being forwarded to the National Park Service for final approval. Together, these places help tell Mississippi’s story at the local, state and national level.
