The state’s 16th Annual March of the Mayors Food Drive officially got underway on January 26. Long Beach residents once again are being asked to drop off canned green beans for this year’s drive, and Pass Christian residents are asked to donate canned corn.

Last year was another record-breaking year for Long Beach, with more than 4,600 cans of green beans collected to go to local food pantries and families in need. In all, more than 30,000 food items were collected in last year’s drive. Organizers with ExtraTable, the non-profit that heads up the drive, are hoping for another record-breaking year, especially considering the increased need.

Mayors in fifty-five cities throughout the state of Mississippi are participating in this year’s drive, including Long Beach and Pass Christian, along with thirteen other coastal municipalities.

Green bean donations can be dropped off at Long Beach City Hall until the March 6 packing party.

Canned corn donations can be dropped off at Pass Christian High School, Pass Christian K-8, City Hall, Fire Station 1 on Second Street and at Walmart.

Donations collected will be organized and distributed at this year’s packing party, set for Friday, March 6, at the Lyman Community Center in Gulfport.  Volunteers from across the Coast are invited to pitch in during the March 6 event, which has been dubbed as “Mississippi’s biggest food box packing party.” Donations will be distributed to food pantries across the Coast, including the Long Beach Food Pantry and the Christian Concern Ministry Food Pantry at Our Mother of Mercy Church in Pass Christian.

March of the Mayors is a state-wide, annual food drive and distribution event hosted by the non-profit group Extra Table. For more information, visit ExtraTable.org.
