PCMS Science Department Inspires Curiosity, Discovery, and a Love of Learning

The Pass Christian Middle School Science Department focuses on creating opportunities for students to explore, question, investigate, and better understand the world around them through engaging instruction, hands-on learning, and a commitment to student success. The PCMS Science Team is composed of Jeannie VanAlstyne, Jennifer Carden, Chastity Isabelle, and Amber White and they are helping students develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the science classroom. Mrs. VanAlstyne’s 8th grade science is ranked number 7th statewide.

Middle school is an important time for students to develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts while discovering how science connects to their everyday lives.

At Pass Middle the Science department works to make learning relevant by encouraging students to ask questions, analyze evidence, conduct investigations, and develop explanations based on what they observe and discover. It is not uncommon to walk into a classroom to find students engaged in hands-on experiments that are intriguing and thought-provoking because the teachers understand that students learn best when they are given opportunities to explore and discover.

The Science teachers at PCMS also emphasize skills that support success across all content areas. In Science class students are challenged to read and interpret informational texts, analyze data, communicate their findings, support conclusions with evidence, and solve complex problems. These skills reinforce the school’s broader focus on literacy, critical thinking, and college and career readiness.
