Garden Club reads to library patrons during summer reading program

The Long Beach Garden Club recently visited the Long Beach Public Library to participate in the library’s summer reading program with the reading of a book, the sponsoring of a gardening activity and the presentation of the book to the library’s collection. The Garden Club has been supporting the summer reading program for ten years. The day’s program and the book presented explored how life revolves around green plants, the importance of preservation and how living green is essential to life.
This year, the Long Beach Garden Club donated My Green Is Gone, authored by Brenda Moore, to the library. Moore is the National Garden Club President and author/co-author of four children’s books, sponsored by the National Garden Club. She has served as a club president, a district director, and the West Virginia Garden Club president prior to her current position. Moore is a former teacher for the West Virginia Department of Education and a former West Virginia public librarian.
The summer reading program is geared toward lower elementary students and family members. My Green is Gone examines what a world would be like without green. The book addressed how living green is essential to plant growth, plant preservation, and all life on Earth. The Long Beach Garden Club has previously donated several books by Brenda Moore to the Long Beach Library’s summer reading program, including The Frightened Frog, which is about the challenges of being a frog, written to educate elementary-aged children on environmental issues affecting amphibians.
Debbie Cox with the Long Beach Garden Club presented the story, engaging students with questions and fun. With Cox’s help, participants had the opportunity to ask questions, design a pot and plant seeds to nurture new growth. Attendees took their pots home to observe the growth of their seeds.
