Ethan Campbell of Pass Christian, majoring in English Education, is one of nine freshmen enrolled at the University of Mississippi as Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy (OMWC) scholars, receiving a $40,000 scholarship plus extensive support opportunities.

Founded in 2000, the OMWC has become one of the nation’s most innovative scholarship programs. The council’s endowment has grown to more than $20 million, and over 200 students have received the scholarships.

“The founding and current members want to cultivate scholars into change agents who will create a caring, more ethical society,” Suzanne Helveston, OMWC program director, said. “We give our scholars the tools to develop their career paths, make lifelong connections with alumni and other professionals and, most importantly, learn the value of servant leadership.”

The Women’s Council provides a wealth of support experiences through two scholar advisers and a program manager who oversee continuous programming. Activities include networking opportunities, lectures, development training and an annual leadership conference that focuses on cultivating students’ leadership skills.

Scholars experience a family atmosphere through intimate dinners with teaching components, community service and mentorship from Oxford-Ole Miss community members. Several of the council’s 36 active members and 23 alliance members, who represent diverse backgrounds, also serve as mentors.

The Women’s Council established the Global Leadership Circle to provide educational opportunities abroad. OMWC scholars can apply for GLC resources to fund study abroad programs or pursue national and international internships.
