Library prepping for summer reading program

By Guest Columnist Renee Rayburn, LBPL Youth and Technology Services

Hello, Long Beach!

Summer Reading is just around the corner, and, this summer, our theme is “Unearth a Story.”  Registration begins on May 1 and can be done one of two ways.

The first way to register is to visit the library’s website and click on the Summer Reading button labeled “Unearth a Story.”

You can also register by visiting the library and filling out a registration form in person in the children’s wing.

This year we are asking that you register all children who will be attending programs.  There will be programs for preschoolers, programs for children in grades school (K – 8), and some family events, as well.

Preschool programs begin Tuesday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the children’s wing, and grade school programs begin on Wednesday, June 3, at 10:30 in the Children’s wing.  A complete schedule of events will be made available on May 1 when you register.

Preschool Story Time will continue through May.  It is held each Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the children’s wing.  This program is geared towards the 4-and-under crowd.  We read a story, make a craft and dance to favorite children’s songs.

There are no meetings scheduled for the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library or the Board of Trustees for the month of May.

Our Sit, Stay, and READ! Program, sponsored by the Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi, is really starting to thrive, and we could not be more excited!  The next program is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, and begins at 10 a.m.

If your child struggles with reading, these trained therapy dogs are not only the perfect audience but also offer a unique solution for children who need encouragement to improve their literacy skills in a non-judgemental environment.  It’s free, and no registration is required.  However, we do ask that an adult accompany the child for this event.  For more information, please call the library at 228-863-0711.

The library will be closed from Saturday, May 23, through Monday, May 25, for the Memorial Day holiday.  We will reopen on Tuesday, May 26, at 9 a.m.

And, as a final reminder, the library’s hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

For more information about any of our events or offerings, please give us a call at 228-863-0711. The library is located at 209 Jeff Davis Avenue.

As always, we thank everyone for their continued support and patronage, and stay safe!
