Local students win math competitions

Posted

Forty-eight local seventh- and eighth-grade students from George, Harrison, Jackson and Stone counties were recently invited to participate in the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics Middle School District Math Tournament at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jackson County Campus. The students, two dozen from each grade, were selected based on their scores on a math test administered earlier this year to 1,250 students at participating schools.

Two Pass Christian Middle School eighth graders took home the top two awards at the district-level competition. Skylar Balch won first place, which included a $150 check, and Tucker Hoffman won second place, along with a $100 check. Both students advanced to the state competition, which was held at the Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science in Columbus, Mississippi. Balch won fourth place at the state level.

Other area students who participated in the district competition included Grayson Werner and Zerriah Brooks of Pass Christian Middle School, as well as Long Beach Middle School students Peyton Reeves, Skylar Lacap, Ishaan Kalluru and Audrey Keeton.
