Science Café on May 9 to feature the art and science of ceramics

Posted

On Thursday, May 9, Science Café on the Coast will host a presentation on “The Art and Science of Ceramics” at 3 p.m. at the Biloxi Public Library.

The event will feature Amanda Bush, who serves as education director for the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art. Bush will give a talk that will delve into the intricacies of the ancient craft of ceramics. Attendees will explore everything from the mineral properties of clay to the crucial role temperature plays in the firing process, and will learn how George Ohr, the “mad potter of Biloxi,” formed his unique shapes and redefined the Arts and Crafts movement.

Science Café on the Coast is a collaboration between The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries, the Harrison County Library System, the Long Beach Public Library, the Hancock County Library System, the Infinity Science Center and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. It is designed to offer those with minimal background in science the chance to meet and discuss scientific issues in a relaxed social setting, and the location of each installment of the program rotates between venues.

Admission is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be available.  For more information, call Librarian Janessa Ullendorf at 228-436-3095. The Biloxi Public Library is located at 580 Howard Avenue.
