Restoration after damage from Hurricane Zeta in 2020 and improvements at the Long Beach Harbor are really starting to take shape.

“I think we’ve had a great amount of progress done here at the harbor,” says Long Beach Mayor Tim Pierce. “We’ve almost completely finished with the inner wall of the harbor. We’ve done the south wall. That’s been completed, and then the curve that goes back to the south wall. The progress has been tremendous. I think we’ve actually gained a couple of months ahead of schedule [for completion].”

Meanwhile, the City of Long Beach will formally dedicate the Long Beach Harbor Master Building in honor of Danny Kaletsch in recognition of his exemplary service, unwavering commitment, and years of dedicated leadership to the Long Beach Harbor.

The dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, January 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Harbor Master Building. The public is invited.

Throughout his career, Kalestch has played a vital role in the growth, safety and operations of the Long Beach Harbor. City leaders say his dedication to the boating community, commercial fishermen and residents has left a lasting impact on the waterfront and the city.

City officials add that the building dedication will serve as a lasting tribute to Kalestch’s legacy of service and the positive influence he has had on generations of harbor users and City employees. Mayor Tim Pierce and members of the Board of Aldermen, along with City staff, harbor partners and community members, are scheduled to be in attendance to honor Kaletsch and celebrate his contributions to Long Beach.

Construction and restoration of the Long Beach Harbor is happening in tandem with the City’s Gateway Project, where progress is also really starting to take shape, as seen from the lighthouse structure on the west end of the Harbor from Highway 90. “We’re excited to watch this project come together and can’t wait to share the final product with our community,” says Courtney Cuevas-Welch, community affairs director for the City of Long Beach. “Stay tuned as construction continues and our gateway to Long Beach becomes a new landmark we can all be proud of.”
