Former Harrison County Firefighter Needs a New Heart

Zachary Layton worked as a firefighter for Harrison County Fire Service giving his heart to this community through dedication, courage and service. He began to experience recurring episodes or atrial fibrillation and over time his cardiac condition worsened to the point that he could no longer work in the fire service due to severe weakness and poor circulation. These issues forced him to step away from the fire service; he didn’t stop serving others, he continued his passion by helping shape future first responders through the Ocean Springs School District.
Zach is currently in Birmingham, Alabama awaiting a heart transplant at The University of Alabama Birmingham. While he waits for a donor heart, Zach must remain in Birmingham so he can be close when that life-changing call comes. He has a loving wife and daughter, and right now their biggest need is securing a place to live there so they can stay together during this difficult time.
His former firefighting crew is working with The Yard Foundation to raise funds to help with living expenses while he waits for the call for a heart. The Yard is a verified, fee-free alternative to crowdfunding and is a 501(C)(3) non-profit. They provide funding and assistance to first responders facing illness, injury or loss. The Yard started with a simple idea on Facebook and has grown to 50,000 plus members. The foundation charges no fees, so 100% of all donations go directly to the individual; but the best part is they add 3.43 percent to all donations. Time is of the essence, this donation link will only be available through Monday, May 11.
