Long Beach Main Street recognized for Radish Festival revitalization
Special to Long Beach Breeze
Long Beach Main Street has been recognized for the successful revival of the Long Beach Radish Festival, a cherished celebration honoring the city’s rich agricultural heritage as the former “Radish Capital of the World.”
The award recognizes Long Beach Main Street’s efforts to bring back a beloved community tradition that had been absent for many years. Through strong community partnerships, the festival has been reimagined for a new generation while preserving its historic roots.
Today, organizers say the Long Beach Radish Festival serves as a vibrant celebration of the city’s unique history, featuring live music, local food, educational programming, family-friendly activities and community events throughout the historic downtown district. The festival not only honors Long Beach’s past but also strengthens community pride and supports local businesses.
A special highlight of this year’s festival was a student-produced play directed by 2026 Radish Queen Carol Paola. Inspired by the children’s book Rosalie and Radishes, the performance brought Long Beach’s agricultural story to life and introduced the city’s history to a new generation of residents and visitors.
“This recognition is truly a community achievement,” said Courtney Cuevas-Welch, executive director of Long Beach Main Street. “The success of the Radish Festival would not be possible without the support of our volunteers, sponsors, local businesses, schools, City leaders and residents who believe in preserving and celebrating Long Beach’s unique story. We are honored to receive this recognition and look forward to continuing to grow this event for years to come.”
The revival of the Long Beach Radish Festival demonstrates how heritage celebrations can preserve local history, strengthen community identity and create meaningful connections between generations. By honoring the city’s agricultural legacy, organizers say the festival continues to educate, inspire, and bring people together in the heart of downtown Long Beach.
