Johnson awarded first place in oratorical contests

Jacoby Johnson, a senior at Pass Christian High School and 2024 Boys State alumni, was recently awarded first place at the Department of Mississippi’s Oratorical Contest District 9 competition held in Biloxi.
Johnson received a certificate, a medal and a cash prize. In addition, Johnson moved on to compete in the American Legion’s Department of Mississippi Southern Area Oratorical Contest, which was held in Gulfport.
In that contest, Johnson again excelled, coming home with a gold medal for winning first place. He will now advance to the Department of Mississippi State Oratorical Contest which will be held in Raymond, Mississippi, at the end of March.
Johnson is sponsored by American Legion Post 1995, Long Beach.
The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U. S. Constitution among high school students. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of thenation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.
The program has featured numerous politicians and prominent contestants over the years, including former presidential candidate Alan Keyes, national television commentator and talk radio host Lou Dobbs, and former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.
