Sawyer wins Ole Miss Stamps Impact Prize
Special to Long Beach Breeze
The Stamps Impact Prize committee recently selected Lenwood “Stokley” Sawyer of Long Beach as one of eight University of Mississippi (UM) students chosen for its biannual competitive award program that funds undergraduate academic and creative projects.
Sawyer, a junior biochemistry major, worked on his project with the help of mentor Sujay Ray, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Sawyer’s project is titled “Illuminating Oxidative Damage: Single-Molecule Fingerprinting of 8-oxoG for Early Disease Detection.”
“Since our launch in 2023, we have funded fifty-seven student projects across a wide range of fields of study at UM,” said Kenneth Sufka, distinguished professor of psychology and pharmacology and research professor in the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Sufka leads the Stamps Impact Prize program.
“Our current cohort is another example of incredibly interesting creative achievement, community service and research projects from exceptionally talented Ole Miss students.”
The university created the competitive award to enhance undergraduate students’ academic experience by supporting innovative, faculty-supported projects that go beyond the classroom. Undergraduate students across all Ole Miss campuses are eligible to receive up to $5,000 to support their work.
