Long Beach School Board Names Curlee as High School Girls’ Basketball Head Coach

Chase Curlee
The Long Beach School District (LBSD) is proud to announce the appointment of Chase Curlee as the new Head Coach for the Long Beach High School Girls’ Basketball program. A Long Beach alumnus, Curlee brings a championship pedigree and a “student-first” philosophy to the position.
Curlee has been an integral part of Long Beach Schools since joining the district in 2019. Alongside teaching, he has served the athletics programs through various head and assistant coaching roles for the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at both the Middle and High Schools.
Superintendent Dr. Talia Lock expresses, “We are excited to name Coach Curlee as our new head girls’ basketball coach. He brings a true heart for students and for Long Beach, along with a fresh energy that will elevate our program. He has already proven himself in our district, and we are confident he will continue to make a strong impact.”
Dr. Lock highlights Curlee’s recent tenure that was marked by a stellar 2023–2024 season, where he led the Middle School boys’ team to a District Championship and was personally honored as the District Coach of the Year. His commitment to the community extends well beyond the classroom; he has also spent several seasons coaching within the Long Beach recreation leagues.
Athletic Director Bob Reeves believes this diverse experience makes Curlee the ideal leader to bridge the gap between the youth and varsity levels. “Coach Curlee brings a strong passion for the game, a tireless work ethic, and a proven ability to build meaningful relationships with student-athletes,” Reeves says. “His commitment to developing the whole athlete—both on and off the court—aligns with the values and vision of Long Beach High School athletics. He is known for fostering a positive and competitive team culture while emphasizing accountability, teamwork, and personal growth. His approach focuses not only on athletic performance but also on preparing student-athletes for success beyond high school.”
Coach Curlee’s vision for the program focuses on “alignment”—ensuring that the same fundamentals, expectations, and values are taught from the youth and recreational levels all the way through high school. By focusing on character-building traits like discipline and accountability, Curlee aims to use the game of basketball to prepare his players for success both on the court and in the classroom.
The Long Beach School District is excited to see Coach Curlee apply his proven leadership and championship-winning strategies to the Bearcat Girls’ Basketball program this coming season.
