Supporting your Kids and their Love for Sport

If you know that your kids are very active, then this is great. With that said, you do need to make sure that you’re supporting them by helping them to find sports that they love, and that can grow with them over time. If you’re not sure how to go about doing this, or if you need some help assisting your child with finding a sport, then this is the guide for you.

Play Sport Together

One of the best ways for you to help your kids get into sports would be for you to try to get involved yourself. Sharing a sport and doing it together will help to motivate them, and it will also keep them interested in the long-term. You could develop a passion for running, and you may also find that you can set different paces as you go on. There are also sports like football, which, if you have a big family, you can make a family get-together. Choose a sport that your kids have a keen interest in and then practice skills that will help them to become better at it. You can take them to the local park to do this, or you can simply take them into the garden, which is great. Of course, if you want your kids to get into sports, then it’s a good idea for you to make sure that they have all of the right equipment. Your child is going to find it hard to play the sport they love if they don’t feel safe or protected. Luckily, it’s more than possible for you to find youth helmets online, and when you do, you will find that you can give your child the equipment they need with ease.

Provide them with Some Support

When kids are learning different sports, they are going to have a few bad shots from time to time. Being there as a parent to support and uplift them during this time is always a good thing. Make sure that you give them some praise for doing well, and support them in progressing where possible. Even celebrating the small wins and telling them that you noticed that they did their best will help, and it will also give them a big boost, which is great. You should also work with them to help them learn from their mistakes. The best way to learn is to try and then fail. As much as kids love to have praise and encouragement, sometimes you need to take a step back and let them learn by themselves. They will become a more compassionate player if you let them do this, and at the same time, you can teach them that there is nothing wrong with failure.

Don’t Put the Pressure On

Sport is made to be fun. If you are constantly trying to make sure that your child is perfect at it, then the only thing that this will do is knock their confidence, which is the last thing you need. If you want to help yourself, you need to teach your kids that winning and losing are part of the game. Take the time to reinforce the more fun aspects of playing sport and get your kids to focus on being the best that they can be, while accepting the fact that they probably aren’t going to be an all-star player. If you do this, then you can support them in building a healthier relationship with the sport, which will help you down the line. You may also find that it’s hard to motivate a child who is simply not motivated, especially when they have actually pledged themselves to a sports team. This question will undoubtedly come up if you have kids who have been doing sports for a while and who have been outgrowing them. If you want to help yourself, then make sure that you speak to your child and ask if they are still enjoying themselves. Ask them if they would like to give something different a go as well. If you can, it’s a good idea for you to find out if they would like to try something that they are possibly more passionate about. If you can do this, while not forcing them, then this will help you a lot. It will also give them the chance to take a step back if they aren’t feeling it anymore, which is so very important.

Put Fun First

As simple as it sounds, you have to make sure that you put fun first. You may find yourself struggling to motivate a child who is well and truly unmotivated, and this is especially the case when they have committed to a sports team in the first place. This question will probably come up if your kids have been into sports for a while. One way to keep things exciting would be for you to take them out to buy some new equipment, and to also make sure that you are putting them first by giving them the help they need to get better. It may be that they need a bit of a break before they go back, or that they simply need time to explore other sports and hobbies. If you want to make sports fun for your child, then you may try to make sports fun at home. One way for you to do this would be for you to try to create your own Olympic Games at home. Better yet, even let them watch the Olympics with you, even if you have to find old videos on YouTube. If you do this, then you can encourage them to get into new sports, and you may also find that you are able to move forward with a bit of confidence. If you can keep this in mind, then you will find that it’s easier than ever for you to not only feel better about yourself, but also make sure that you’re not holding them back from other interests.
